We recognise the value of arts and design in creating vibrant communities. We employ design to enhance the features of our developments and infuse art to add vitality to our facilities.

Infusing art in real estate

Mapletree has three Public Art Trails comprising Mapletree-commissioned artworks by renowned local and international artists, as well as historical maritime artefacts transformed into art pieces for display at communal locations at some of our flagship properties – Mapletree Business City (MBC), VivoCity and St James Power Station.

Mapletree supports and organises a series of arts engagement programmes featuring the Public Art Trails, suitable for all ages, open to public.

  • Public Art Trail Tours are guided walking tours that enable participants to learn about the artists’ vision behind each piece, and how art can bring vitality to the environment in addition to enhancing community spaces in our urban landscape.
  • Kids’ Craft Workshop brings the Merryweather Pump Escape Fire Engine and Fullerton Lighthouse to life for children aged 5 – 10 years old. Kids learn about the history of each artefact, how they came to become art pieces at MBC and finally assemble mini replicas of the art works with the help of friendly teachers and a step-by step folding guide.

Mapletree Business City

13 artworks and 2 artefacts are featured at Mapletree’s flagship development, Mapletree Business City (MBC). The art pieces have been specially commissioned for display at communal locations where people gather for recreation and social interaction. They have become convenient landmarks as well as help to cultivate distinct identities for MBC.

Culture City. Culture Scape.

In a unique collaboration, Mapletree commissioned five new art installations nestled in MBC II under the theme “Culture City. Culture Scape.” curated by NTU Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) Singapore. Inspired by the idea of expanded sculptural environments, the artworks explore the interplay between landscape, architecture, and the broader social and economic conditions they are placed in.

This collaboration enhances the community space and amenities at MBC II, designed for tenants and visitors to enjoy and interact with its lush landscape specially created as a natural eco system. These are works of internationally renowned artists, namely:

  • Dan Graham (United States)
  • Zulkifle Mahmod (Singapore)
  • Tomàs Saraceno (Argentina/Germany)
  • Yinka Shonibare CBE (Nigeria/United Kingdom)

In addition, two artefacts (Merryweather Pump Escape Fire Engine and Fullerton Lighthouse) are shown that highlight Mapletree’s attempt at preserving a part of Singapore’s heritage.

VivoCity

VivoCity is a permanent gallery for seven specially commissioned artworks from the inaugural Singapore Biennale in 2006. Installed at public spaces, the collection is an attempt to bring arts to the masses as part of a holistic lifestyle experience.

St James Power Station

St James Power Station (SJPS) was gazetted as a National Monument in 2009. As part of Mapletree’s strategy for the HarbourFront Precinct which lies at the heart of the Greater Southern Waterfront, Mapletree embarked on the execution of the addition and alteration works for SJPS in 2018, with the preservation of the historical architectural elements of the iconic monument integrated with modern building technologies.

Today, the refurbished SJPS houses a heritage gallery in one of its distinctive chimneys and a heritage trail featuring maritime artefacts around the monument. The St James Power Station Heritage Trail and Gallery reflects the nation’s history as a trading hub, its rich heritage and progressive transformation over the years into a world-class city centre.
